Pine is not the best wood for the hearth but is enjoyed due to its fresh fragrance

splitting?

East to split

igniting?

Usually needs other wood kindling to fire it up as the wood tends to smoulder at first

sparking?

Tends to spark a lot once it starts burning

smoking?

Can be quite smokey

heat quality?

Lower than most woods and has to be well seasoned due to high water content but when it burns it burns fairly quickly too.

However, willow is a very popular biomass fuel due to being fast growing, easy to coppice, and when willow is cut live at the right time and stored well it can be a good fuel. Willow is a very popular choice of wood for creating wood chip fuel, though Ash would be better for this, but willow provides a better yield of wood per acre, especially from coppicing.
